Men’s Belly Fat

In America, we have been taught in our society to look at those with a bigger belly in a different light. We may view them as lazy, overweight, unattractive, and many more things. Whether or not, we look attractive is just one of the concerns of having belly fat. A bigger concern especially for men is health risks and concerns that can be linked to having belly fat. It is important to know about these concerns and what can be done about men’s belly fat to maintain a healthy weight and life.

According to CNNHealth.com, “Belly Fat in Men: Why weight loss Matters”, having a large amount of belly fat may increase your risk for: heart disease, stroke, some types of cancer, Type 2 diabetes, Insulin Resistance, high triglycerides, low levels of high-density lipoprotein or “good” cholesterol, metabolic syndrome and sleep apnea.

For men, the risk for heart disease increase with a waist size more than forty inches. Age can also play a role in gaining weight. Muscle loss and not being physical active enough can slow the rate at which the body burns calories. Body fat can be inherited but for men it has more to due with lifestyle than heredity. Many men may think that beer can cause a belly, but drinking any alcohol can increase belly fat and should be limited (recommended to two drinks a day) and drank in moderation.

Some ways that men can reduce or get rid of belly fat include: reducing calories by reducing portion sizes, and increasing physical activity. “The Department of Health and Human Services” recommends thirty minutes of moderate aerobic activity or an hour and fifteen minutes of vigorous aerobic activity and strength training.

It is important for men to exercise daily and maintain a health diet to maintain their weight and reduce their chances of disease and other health concerns. Belly Fat in men may be unattractive and people may look at them as lazy or drinking too much, but belly fat can also cause health problems and needs to be thought about when considering men’s health and exercise and diet. Considering belly fat for men will help to lower risks for health problems in the future.
